چکیده

Medical-imaging systems are designed to aid medical specialists in a specific task. In order to satisfy the quality preferences of a human observer, the optimization of medicalimaging systems has to include measurements of human performance and has to use these results for final tuning of the physical parameters of the system. To measure human performance it is necessary to conduct the psychophysical studies and have the human medical specialist asses the quality of the system. However, these studies are very costly in terms of both time and money. In this research, we investigate numerical observer models and the benefits of using these as a supplement, or even as a substitute for human observer studies.

Task-based lens design with application to digital mammography.

Recent advances in model observers that predict human perceptual performance now make it possible to optimize medical imaging systems for human task performance. We illustrate the procedure by considering the design of a lens for use in an optically coupled digital mammography system. The channelized Hotelling observer is used to model human performance, and the channels chosen are differences ...

Sample manuscript showing specifications and style

Barten’s model of spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity function of human visual system is embedded in a multi-slice channelized Hotelling observer. This is done by 3D filtering of the stack of images with the spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity function and feeding the result (i.e., the perceived image stack) to the multi-slice channelized Hotelling observer. The proposed procedure of consider...

Implementation of a channelized Hotelling observer model to assess image quality of x-ray angiography systems.

Evaluation of flat-panel angiography equipment through conventional image quality metrics is limited by the scope of standard spatial-domain image quality metric(s), such as contrast-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution, or by restricted access to appropriate data to calculate Fourier domain measurements, such as modulation transfer function, noise power spectrum, and detective quantum efficie...

Optimization of energy window and evaluation of scatter compensation methods in myocardial perfusion SPECT using the ideal observer with and without model mismatch and an anthropomorphic model observer.

We used the ideal observer (IO) and IO with model mismatch (IO-MM) applied in the projection domain and an anthropomorphic channelized Hotelling observer (CHO) applied to reconstructed images to optimize the acquisition energy window width and to evaluate various scatter compensation methods in the context of a myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) defect detec...

Channelized Relevance Vector Machine as a Numerical Observer for Cardiac Perfusion Defect Detection Task

In this paper, we present a numerical observer for image quality assessment, aiming to predict human observer accuracy in a cardiac perfusion defect detection task for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). In medical imaging, image quality should be assessed by evaluating the human observer accuracy for a specific diagnostic task. This approach is known as task-based assessment. S...
